My long-term interests lie in a non-representational diverse media practice that is situated in the expanded field of painting. My work at times plays with references to art history, particularly colour field painting, and connections I make between painting, light as a medium and spatial interventions. In my PhD research I found that almost all light artists had been non-representational painters previously and that there were deep links between movements such as Op Art and Kinetic art that led onto the use of light as a medium in art.
These concepts will be developed further at Five Walls Projects in several ways. After site visits and discussion I chose a video Colour fields 5, a still light box and a third sculptural triptych of screens that together set up a material play in the space and between the works that expand relationships between colour field painting and light as a medium. This show is about the relationships within the space of the works and the relationship between the three works and extended space. They extend material dialogues that I have set up in the past.
The video references both painting and light colour fields at the same time. It draws you in to view it and then immerses you in a field of colour. Its slowly changing fields of colour allow you to consider relationships in the same space.
On the night of ONIF/One Night In Footscray, Friday 22nd November from 5 to 10 p.m. there will be a subtle sound overlay of music for 10 minutes every hour and I will also be available for roaming discussion that night. The Due West Arts Festival is also running from 15th – 24th November.
I have called this show Space is never empty as an Acknowledgment of Country to the Traditional Land Owners in appreciation of the layers of meaning in this space where I am exhibiting. My artwork is also carbon offset.
